Every day more and more is revealed about the environment, and every day we are more aware of how important it is to take action. There is no single answer that will provide a quick fix to the environment’s problems, but if we each pitch in and work as a team then we make a significant improvement on the health of our planet. Implementing a green and sustainable agenda in your home furnishing selections can make a positive impact on the environment. We are very proud of Carpet One’s Green Select program. Environmentally conscious products are labeled in our stores with a face sticker so you can recognize all of your choices. (GREEN SELECT LOGO) FLOORING Smartstrand carpets are made from 40% corn and corn by-products. Corn is a renewable resource that can be regenerated in a short amount of time. Every 7 yards of Smartstrand carpet conserves one gallon of gasoline. Green Select carpets are made with from nylon 6 fibers. The nylon 6 carpets contain post-consumer fibers, are recyclable at the end of the carpet’s life, and can be ground up and remanufactured into new carpet or other products many times over. Manufacturers of Green Select carpets take in 3 billion plastic bottles per year to be recycled into carpet fibers. MCI Carpet One Floor and Home features many lines of hardwood flooring. An engineered wood floor is environmentally a better choice than a ¾” solid hardwood, as it uses less lumber per piece and each tree cut down gives us more planks of flooring. All of the hardwood flooring manufacturers participates in reforestation processes, meaning that for each tree that is harvested one or more seedlings are planted. Many of the production plants have begun incorporating production plans that utilize 100% of the tree into the manufacturing process, using sawdust, scrap pieces, roots and leaves as fuel for the drying kilns or keeping the warehouses warm in the winter. Vinyl flooring is, for the most part, VOC free. VOC stands for volatile organic compounds and are the result of chemical reactions taking place in petroleum based products, result in a not so favorable smell. Most of the vinyl flooring options at MCI Carpet One Floor and Home are VOC-free as are the adhesives used in installing the product. Bamboo and cork flooring have grown in popularity with the green movement. We feature a great selection of both. Bamboo is considered a green product because bamboo plants are not completely cut down in order to manufacture the flooring. Bamboo can be harvested every 5-6 years, whereas hardwood trees take up to 60 years to reach full maturity. The species of bamboo we use in flooring is a variety named Moso and is not a food source for pandas. Cork flooring is the bark peeled from the cork tree and can be harvested from the same tree every 9 years. As such, a 200-year old cork tree can still be producing usable product. Scraps and waste from the wine bottling industry are recycled and made into cork flooring also. LIGHTING MCI Carpet One Floor and Home plays host to numerous lighting companies that feature Energy Star rated chandeliers, sconces, vanity lights and others. For a minimal charge per socket, fixtures can be ordered that will only accept a compact fluorescent bulb. Compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) will last approximately 5 times longer than a regular incandescent bulb and use less energy to boot. We offer many different styles of fluorescent bulbs for a variety of different looks and uses. WINDOW TREATMENTS Windows act as the single least energy efficient architectural element to any building. In the winter time heat escapes through the windows; in the summertime it is the cool air-conditioned temperatures that are lost. With the addition of an insulation to the windows, the amount of energy wasted can be dramatically reduced, and window treatments can act as this insulation. Generally speaking, windows have an R-value of 2 (versus the roof and walls, typically rated with an R-value of 14 or higher). R-value is the measure of the capacity of a material to impede heat flow with the higher the number representing a higher insulation level. With the addition of an Architella blind, the R-value of your homes windows can be raised up to a 6, potentially saving $800 per year in heating/cooling costs. WHAT IS MCI CARPET ONE FLOOR & HOME DOING TO GO GREEN? MCI is dedicated to doing our fair share to help aid in the quest to clean up Mother Earth. As such, we have been recycling carpet and carpet padding for the last eight years. The amount of padding recycled averages about 600 pounds per week. We estimate that these efforts alone keep over 200,000 tons of waste out of landfills each year. The lighting showroom at MCI/Carpet One is an Energy Star certified authorized dealer. We are able to give our consumers many lighting options that will not only illuminate any area, but also save on energy costs for years ahead. The majority of our display fixtures are shown hosting compact fluorescent light bulbs, which helps conserve electricity for the St. Cloud area. You can bring in your old, non-working residential fluorescent bulbs to us, and we will dispose of them in compliance with the rules and regulations of hazardous waste before setting you up with another new one! Internally, MCI recycles nearly 100% of all paper generated wastes. Cardboard, soda cans, plastic and glass bottles from the employee lounge are recycled. Boxes and shipping materials are always reused. Each employee knows the importance of protecting our environment and does his or her part to pitch in. Every effort matters, and together we can make a difference. |
